Bay to Bow to Garden Window

Most of us see bay, bow and garden windows when we drive past homes in our neighborhoods. You can’t miss these window systems just by how they protrude from the exterior of the homes they are installed in. These window systems make a huge statement and normally dominate the facade of the home.
It is important to understand the basic differences between a bay, bow and garden window.

Bay Windows

    • A bay window always has a large flat center picture window. Each side of a bay then has one operable window, either a double hung or a casement window.
    • Bay windows always offer the most in un-obstructed views due to the large center picture window.
    • Bay windows are considered very traditional; they work well in raised ranches and other types of colonials.

Bow Windows

    • A bow window is always curved in front, just like a bow that shoots an arrow.
    • A bow window can have multiple window sections all equal in width. Normally these sections are casement windows that operate or are fixed in place.
    • Bow windows offer more operable window sections providing more air flow.
    • Bow windows are considered more contemporary and do provide a dressier look.
    • Bow windows fit a large variety of home styles, but have many more vertical obstructions than a bay.

Garden Windows

    • Garden windows are designed just like a bay window with the exception that it has a glass roof.
    • Garden windows allow the maximum amount of visible light in a given area.
    • Garden windows are normally found in the back or side of a home.
    • Many Garden windows come with glass shelves so customers have a nice place to put plants.

All these systems are normally custom made to size and spec. Even the amount a bay or bow window protrudes from a home needs to be noted. Bays and bows require a custom made roof or a pre-manufactured metal roofing system. These units are very heavy and require cabling to the home for proper support. It is highly recommended that these systems be purchased with high performance glass systems and insulated head and seat boards. The anchoring of these window systems are critical and should be performed by a professional. Sizing, proportion, style and location are extremely important when it comes to bays, bows and garden windows. If all these items are done correctly they add considerable looks and value to a home.
