Many people do not realize there are many different ways of installing different window systems. Depending on your application this will effect what type of window system you purchase. Most people recognize the two main types of window systems” replacements” and” new construction” as far as installation methods go I would like to explain how we categorize them.
- Full extraction method This is the most involved of any installation. It requires removing the entire existing window system, including all interior and exterior trim. Sometimes depending on an application we need to cut back on the existing siding to remove a window system. On the inside if there is no trim and only sheetrock we will cut back on that as well. We would now be down to what we call the rough opening. At this point we now have the option if required to enlarge or decrease the opening, most of the time the window is sized to fit this rough opening. Preparing the rough opening for the new window system requires soft weather stripping or flashing”Proper flashing techniques guarantee water tightness”. The New window system will now be placed into the opening. Lots of time is spent squaring up the new window frame with wood shims. Once the new window frame is properly squared, it is fasten securely based on the manufacturers’ recommendations. Foam filling is required for open cavities between window frame and rough opening. It is very important to use the proper foam fill for windows and doors. Interior trim is installed based on customer preferences. Exterior trim is finished based on what works best for home.
- New construction method This is where the window system is being installed into a newly built wall. These are relatively simple as long as the proper time is taken to square up the new window system. Most new construction windows come with a nailing flange. A nail flange is a fin that is applied around outside of the new window system. The window is simply set into the opening, squared up, then the over laying flange gets nailed to exterior of wall. Soft weather seals and caulking must be applied in an underlying and overlapping fashion with the nail flange. Now the window can be finished off any way seen fit inside and out. Some will run the exterior siding right up against the window system. Others will apply a nice exterior casing then start the siding. On the Interior you can keep it very simple and just run sheetrock up to the window, or do some decorative wood trim details.
- Replacement window method This is considered one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to change windows. It allows the installer to work with the existing window frame. Remove any old screen or storm window that may be attached to the existing window frame. The operable parts of the existing window are removed. A replacement window is sized so that it fits into the existing window frame opening”It is exactly like putting one window into another”. Just like any installation method, proper time must be taken to prep, square, flash and caulk.
- Special notes Every application is unique in one way or another. It takes years to learn proper window installation techniques. We highly recommend you leave it to professionals. Remember if a window is installed wrong not only will it not work correctly, but it could be allowing damaging water to enter between walls without you knowing.
